Originally a glue would be added to the pot underneath and the cassette tape was then pressed onto the sponge above it to apply glue to the shell and you would then press that glued side onto the relevant stack of A or B plain paper labels.
These days it can also be used with pre-stickered labels that are placed in the holders and then the tape is then pressed down to apply.
